Comprehensive Hormonal Health Care

Hormonal imbalances can significantly impact your quality of life, affecting everything from your menstrual cycle to your fertility and overall wellbeing. At Elara, we take a thorough, evidence-based approach to diagnosing and managing hormonal and reproductive health conditions.

Our doctors will work with you to understand your symptoms, identify underlying causes, and develop a personalised treatment plan that addresses your individual needs and health goals.

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)

Women with PCOS may experience different symptoms which may include:

  • Irregular or no periods
  • Excess hair on your face/body/both
  • Frontal balding
  • Acne
  • Weight gain

There can also be a predisposition to type 2 diabetes and fertility issues.

Our doctors will recommend tests to exclude other conditions and formulate a management plan to help with the symptoms of PCOS, improve fertility and reduce the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Management may include:

  • Lifestyle modifications (diet and exercise)
  • Hormonal contraception to regulate cycles
  • Medications to improve insulin sensitivity
  • Fertility support when needed
  • Cardiovascular and metabolic health monitoring

Heavy Menstrual Bleeding

This can occur at all stages of a woman's reproductive life, and there are different management strategies depending on the underlying cause and individual preferences.

Our doctors at Elara will organise appropriate investigations to exclude iron deficiency anaemia, bleeding disorders, fibroids, endometriosis or endometrial polyps.

Non-hormonal treatment options can include tranexamic acid, and hormonal options include the combined oral contraceptive pill or the Mirena. Sometimes referral to a gynaecologist for further investigation or endometrial ablation may be needed.

We will assess:

  • Impact on your quality of life
  • Iron levels and anaemia risk
  • Underlying structural causes (fibroids, polyps)
  • Hormonal factors
  • Your treatment preferences and contraceptive needs

Management approaches:

  • Tranexamic acid (non-hormonal)
  • Combined oral contraceptive pill
  • Mirena IUD
  • Specialist referral when needed

Abnormal Vaginal Bleeding

This can include bleeding after sexual intercourse, spotting between periods and post-menopausal bleeding (bleeding more than 1 year after the final menstrual period).

It's vital to investigate any abnormal vaginal bleeding to exclude any underlying serious cause eg cervical or endometrial cancer. If a pelvic ultrasound is required, it's important that this is done by an experienced specialist gynaecological ultrasonographer and with transvaginal ultrasound (TVUS).

When to seek assessment:

  • Bleeding after sexual intercourse
  • Spotting or bleeding between periods
  • Post-menopausal bleeding (any bleeding after 12 months without a period)
  • Unusually heavy or prolonged bleeding
  • Bleeding with pain or other concerning symptoms

Our assessment includes:

  • Detailed history and examination
  • Cervical screening if due
  • Specialist transvaginal ultrasound (TVUS)
  • Blood tests as appropriate
  • Referral to gynaecology if needed
