Health Checks for Women
These are available for women at all stages of reproductive life and in younger women will include cervical screening and sexual health risk assessments.
In older women, these will include cardiovascular, diabetes and osteoporosis risk assessments with the aim of identifying lifestyle changes that can be implemented to prevent heart attacks, strokes, diabetes, dementia and osteoporosis.
For younger women:

Cervical Screening
It is recommended to have cervical screening if you have a cervix, are aged 25 to 74 yrs and have ever had sexual contact with another person regardless of gender. You need to have a test every 5 years.
Most women are eligible for self-collection, and this is just as accurate as having a health care provider take your sample. Our doctors will assess whether you are suitable for a cervical screen self-test and can assist with the completion of the test.
Who should have cervical screening:
- Women aged 25-74 years
- Anyone with a cervix who has ever had sexual contact
- Every 5 years (if previous tests are normal)
Self-collection benefits:
- Just as accurate as provider collection
- More comfortable and private
- Can be done in the clinic with support
- Reduces barriers to screening

Breast Checks / Dense Breasts
We now know that higher breast density is linked with a higher risk of breast cancer. Where higher breast density is noted on a mammogram, it is usually recommended to have a clinician assessment and consideration given to further investigation, such as a breast ultrasound.
The iPrevent tool can be used to assess breast cancer risk and guide appropriate screening and prevention strategies.
What is breast density?
- Refers to the amount of fibrous and glandular tissue in breasts
- Dense breasts are common (about 40% of women)
- Can make mammograms harder to read
- Associated with slightly higher breast cancer risk
If you have dense breasts:
- Clinical breast examination
- Consideration of breast ultrasound
- Risk assessment using iPrevent tool
- Discussion of screening frequency
- Lifestyle advice for breast health
When to seek assessment:
- Dense breasts noted on mammogram
- Family history of breast cancer
- Breast lumps or changes
- Nipple discharge or changes
